Adapt or restart a routine · S3.11

Build choice into a routine

A planned habit feels too rigid or uncomfortable to follow.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Identify the purpose of the routine and the part that feels difficult.
  2. Create an alternative version that serves the purpose while changing the timing, setting, or amount.
  3. Choose between the versions when the moment arrives, including skipping and reconsidering the plan.

An example

The evening checklist feels overwhelming. I can choose one essential item and leave the rest for tomorrow.

Reflect

Did having an alternative make the routine more workable?

Next time

Revise the plan based on experience rather than treating discomfort as a failure of consistency.
