Choose trust, closeness and commitment · S14.18

Check whether a commitment is mutually wanted

You are unsure about continuing or changing a relational commitment.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Identify what you want, what you are unsure about, and what you cannot offer.
  2. If appropriate, invite the other person to describe their own position without pressure.
  3. Choose a discussion, adjustment, pause, or ending consistent with consent and your boundaries.

An example

I want to keep in touch, but I cannot maintain the current frequency of visits.

Reflect

Did the conversation allow different wishes to be stated honestly?

Next time

Revisit only as needed; stronger commitment is not the required result.
