Say no and define a boundary · S8.6

Separate a firm limit from flexible details

You want to negotiate an arrangement while keeping an important limit clear.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Write what is not available or acceptable to you.
  2. List any details you are willing to discuss, such as timing, format, or a smaller contribution.
  3. State the firm limit first and offer only alternatives you genuinely want to offer.

An example

I cannot work Saturday. I can discuss a handover on Friday if that helps.

Reflect

Did the discussion stay within what you were willing to negotiate?

Next time

You can withdraw an optional offer if circumstances change; flexibility does not require abandoning the limit.
