Compare options and competing needs · S6.13

Listen to two competing concerns

One part of you wants to act while another part is hesitant.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Write each concern as a sentence: 'I want...' and 'I am concerned that...'
  2. Identify what each concern is trying to protect or make possible, without deciding that either is bad.
  3. Choose a step that acknowledges both concerns, or name the information needed before choosing.

An example

I want to join the group, and I worry about overload. I can attend the first part and leave when I need to.

Reflect

Did either concern become clearer when you described it fairly?

Next time

Review the choice after you learn more, rather than trying to eliminate all conflict.
