Compare options and competing needs · S1.11

Put two sides of a dilemma into words

You feel pulled in different directions and want to understand what each concern is trying to protect.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Write two perspectives using ordinary language, such as ‘Part of me wants…’ and ‘Another part is worried about…’.
  2. For each perspective, name a need, concern, or possible consequence. Neither side has to be the correct one.
  3. Look for a small next step that acknowledges both, or write the question you would want help thinking through.

An example

Part of me wants to go; another part needs rest. I could ask about a shorter visit without committing yet.

Reflect

Did naming both perspectives clarify the tension, or is another way of describing it more accurate?

Next time

You can leave the dilemma unresolved or talk it through with someone you trust.
