Find the first step · S2.2
Give one task a clear starting point
You want to try focusing on one task rather than choosing repeatedly between several.
Everyday practice
Try these steps
- Choose a small task and name the first visible action.
- Move aside one competing item if practical, and put the material for your chosen task in reach.
- Try the action until a stopping point you choose. When attention wanders, decide whether to return, change the setup, or pause.
An example
I’ll read the first paragraph with the other document minimized, then decide whether to continue.
Reflect
What drew your attention away, and what change might make the task easier?
Next time
Use what you noticed to adjust the task or environment.
