Ask for a supportive response

You want to discuss something sensitive and need conditions that work for you.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Decide what would make the conversation workable: privacy, no teasing, listening first, or a shorter discussion.
  2. Ask the other person whether they can agree to that request.
  3. Notice their response and choose whether to continue. You can say, 'I do not want to discuss this further right now.'

An example

Could you listen for a moment without comparing this to other people's experiences?

Reflect

Was your request understood and respected?

Next time

Choose future conversations based on what happened, not only what was promised.
