Rehearse two interpretations of an everyday conversation

You want to see how an assumption changes what you would say.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Choose a low-stakes exchange and write two plausible interpretations, labeling both as possibilities.
  2. Privately or with a willing partner, rehearse one response under each interpretation.
  3. Compare the responses and choose wording that asks for clarification without pretending you know the motive.

An example

If 'Can we talk?' means criticism, I might become defensive; if it means planning, I would ask about timing. 'What would you like to discuss?' fits either.

Reflect

Which response leaves room for information you do not yet have?

Next time

Use the clarifying wording in a suitable conversation if you choose.
