Handle disagreement or take a pause · S9.19

Give a tense conversation a little more space

You and another person are struggling to hear each other.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Ask whether a slower pace, shorter turns, or a break would be useful.
  2. If you both want to continue, agree on one adjustment and try it.
  3. Check whether either person needs a different arrangement or wants to stop.

An example

Could we each finish one point before the other answers? If that is not working, let's pause.

Reflect

Did the adjustment make understanding easier, or only prolong the exchange?

Next time

Use the arrangement again only when it suits both people.
