Handle disagreement or take a pause · S9.11

Notice a conversation pattern early

An exchange is moving into a familiar pattern you would like to change.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Identify an observable sign such as repeated interruptions, raised voices, or repeating the same point.
  2. Name your own part in the pattern without diagnosing the other person.
  3. Suggest one change: take turns, clarify the question, or pause and agree whether to return.

An example

We are repeating our positions. Could we first check what decision we need to make?

Reflect

Was the suggested change useful or did you need to stop?

Next time

Keep the cue specific enough to notice without constantly monitoring the conversation.
