Answer self-criticism with accuracy · S6.11
Recognize the start of a self-critical loop
You notice the same harsh thought repeating after certain situations.
Everyday practice
Try these steps
- Describe the situation just before the loop began, using observable details.
- Name the repeated thought and one early sign that you are getting caught in it.
- Choose a cue for a pause or a practical response. A trusted person can use an agreed question such as 'What do you need right now?'
An example
After rereading my message repeatedly, I notice 'I sound stupid.' My cue is to close the draft and check what question I actually need answered.
Reflect
Was there an early sign you could recognize without monitoring yourself constantly?
Next time
Refine the cue after another naturally occurring example.
