Prepare or review a boundary conversation · S8.19

Plan a pause around a difficult conversation

You want time before or after a boundary discussion rather than expecting yourself to stay composed throughout.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Choose a practical pause before or after the conversation if possible.
  2. Decide what you would like during that pause: quiet, ordinary activity, company, or no additional task.
  3. Prepare a line for stopping or postponing the conversation if you need one.

An example

I need to stop here for now. I’ll let you know when I can return to this.

Reflect

Did the pause fit your needs, or did you need something different?

Next time

A pause does not have to make you relaxed to be a reasonable choice.
