Prepare or review a boundary conversation · S8.7

Notice when you want a pause in a conversation

You want to recognize a cue that a limit-setting conversation needs a pause.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Choose a cue you can notice comfortably, such as speaking faster, losing your words, or wanting more space.
  2. Prepare a short pause line that fits an ordinary conversation.
  3. If the cue appears, decide whether to use the line and step away or change the setting when practical.

An example

I need a moment to think before I answer. I’ll come back to this later today.

Reflect

Was the cue useful, or would a different sign or arrangement fit better?

Next time

Practice the pause line beforehand if helpful; you do not need to feel calm before stating a limit.
