Express values and appreciation together · S5.14

Find shared values without assuming you agree

You and another person want to understand what matters in a shared decision.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Each name one value or need relevant to the decision, using an example.
  2. Compare what the words mean in practice; the same word can refer to different expectations.
  3. Identify an area of overlap and a difference that still needs negotiation.

An example

We both value fairness: one of us means equal time, the other means time based on need.

Next time

Shared values do not remove the need for consent, boundaries, or practical agreement.
