Separate facts, predictions and interpretations · D8.17
Check an assumption in a relationship
You notice you may be interpreting another person through a familiar expectation.
Everyday practice
Try these steps
- Describe what the person actually said or did, then write your interpretation separately.
- Consider what you know about the context and one other possible interpretation, without dismissing concerning behavior.
- Choose whether to ask for clarification, state a need, maintain a boundary, or wait for more information.
An example
They cancelled twice. I can ask whether the plan still fits them instead of deciding the reason for them.
Reflect
What became clearer, and what behavior still matters regardless of intention?
Next time
Use patterns and context; alternative explanations do not require accepting harmful behavior.
