Replace an absolute with a precise description

You notice words such as 'always,' 'never,' or 'everyone' in a conclusion.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Write the sentence and underline the absolute word.
  2. Check the examples you actually know, including exceptions and missing information.
  3. Rewrite the claim so its scope fits the evidence; a serious problem can still be described plainly.

An example

Instead of 'Nobody listens,' try 'I was interrupted twice in that meeting, and I want to finish my point.'

Reflect

Is the revised sentence more accurate and useful?

Next time

Use the specific description when making a request or discussing the problem.
