Choose or review a commitment · S3.20
Understand competing wishes about a routine
You want a routine and also have reasons to resist it.
Everyday practice
Try these steps
- Write one sentence for each wish, such as wanting structure and wanting freedom.
- Name what each wish protects or makes possible without treating either as the problem.
- Design a small trial that leaves room for both, or decide what question needs more thought.
An example
I want regular reading but dislike a strict bedtime rule. I can keep a book nearby and choose when to open it.
Reflect
Did the trial respect both concerns?
Next time
A compromise can be temporary; you do not have to eliminate the tension.
