Tell a fuller account of an experience · S6.17

Tell a more complete account

A story about a setback has become a fixed judgment about who you are.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Describe what happened using facts you know; leave uncertain details uncertain.
  2. Add relevant context, including constraints, help, choices, and consequences that the harsh version leaves out.
  3. Write a conclusion about this event rather than your entire identity. It can acknowledge harm and unfinished questions.

An example

I missed the deadline after underestimating the work. I need to update the team and plan the next stage differently.

Reflect

What became more accurate when you added context?

Next time

Revise the account only when you have new information; a positive ending is not required.
