Notice the present or join an activity · D3.1
Observe before interpreting
You want to notice what is happening before deciding what it means.
Everyday practice
Try these steps
- Choose one ordinary thing to observe, such as a sound, an object, or an action.
- Notice its features without adding a cause or motive.
- Separate the observation from any interpretation that follows.
An example
I hear a door close loudly; I do not yet know whether someone is angry.
Reflect
What did you directly observe?
Next time
Use the distinction when an interpretation would affect your next action.
