Choose where to place your attention · S7.7

Choose whether attention goes inward or outward

A proposed exercise asks you to focus on body sensations.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Check whether that kind of attention is something you want right now.
  2. Choose a neutral external detail, ordinary activity, or no exercise instead if preferred.
  3. Tell a facilitator or support person your preference and stop if the practice is unwelcome.

An example

I would rather look at the room than focus on sensations in my chest.

Reflect

Did you have a real choice about attention?

Next time

Use individualized guidance where relevant rather than a universal grounding rule.
