Check a social cue instead of guessing
You notice a behavior and are unsure what it means.
Everyday practice
Try these steps
- Describe the cue without assigning an emotion or intention.
- Consider that several explanations may fit, including communication style, culture, access needs, or distraction.
- If the meaning matters, ask a respectful question rather than relying on the cue alone.
An example
You have been quiet; would you like more time to think, or is there something you want to add?
Reflect
Did the person's answer differ from your first guess?
Next time
Use explicit preferences as stronger evidence than a rule about body language.
