Consider another view or update an opinion · S10.6

Ask what your first view may have missed

You have formed a quick opinion and want to check its limits.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. State your current view and what led you to it.
  2. Ask a relevant person, 'What might I be missing?' or consult information you have not considered.
  3. Record what you learned before deciding whether to keep, qualify, or change your view.

An example

I thought the delay meant low priority; the organizer explains that they are waiting for an access arrangement.

Reflect

Which new detail affected your conclusion, if any?

Next time

Keep the conclusion open to new evidence without assuming every challenge to it is correct.
