State a need or make a request · S8.2

State a need without promising agreement

You want to express a need clearly in an ordinary conversation.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Name the situation and what you need in one or two sentences.
  2. Make a specific request rather than expecting the other person to infer the change you want.
  3. Ask what they understood if useful. Decide what you can do if the request is declined; clear wording cannot guarantee agreement.

An example

I need time to finish this. Could we discuss the other task after lunch?

Reflect

Was the need clear, and what response remains to be addressed?

Next time

Rehearse the wording with someone you trust before a difficult conversation if helpful.
