Describe yourself with room to change · S10.17

Loosen a fixed label about yourself

A label such as 'disorganized' or 'bad at people' has become your whole explanation.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Write the label and identify the particular situations you are using as evidence.
  2. Look for differences across contexts, including supports or exceptions; do not invent positive examples.
  3. Replace the label with a description of the situation and a change you might test.

An example

I lose track when tasks arrive in several places. A single list might help me see them together.

Reflect

Does the new description point to something more specific than identity?

Next time

Update the description as you learn which conditions matter.
