Choose the scope of a sensitive conversation · S7.12

Choose the scope of a support conversation

You want assistance without being pushed to process an experience.

Everyday practice

Try these steps

  1. Identify what you want from the conversation: information, listening, practical help, or discussing treatment choices.
  2. State any topics or details you do not want to address.
  3. Ask whether the person can work within that scope, and choose another form of support if needed.

An example

I want to discuss sleep arrangements and appointments today, not describe the event.

Reflect

Did the conversation stay within your chosen scope?

Next time

Change the scope only when you choose.
